Scandal gets worse: Minister Soini took part in a pro-life vigil and march during official visit in Canada

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland Timo Soini caused a political scandal with his harsh statement on the Irish referendum on last Sunday. As if this would not have been enough, new information regarding Soini’s personal pro-life actions during his official duties has emerged. This lead again to political protests made by Finnish MPs suggesting, whether there are no limits to Minister Soini’s personal political actions manifesting a conflict with the official positions of Finland.
Well. Obviously, there seems to be no limits.
Earlier this month, Minister Soini made an official visit to Ottawa, Canada, to meet his colleagues Chrystia Freeland and Carolyn Bennett together with other representatives of the administration. During the visit, Soini’s State Secretary Samuli Virtanen tweeted a photo of himself together with Soini taking part in a pro-life march on 10th May.
Pro life also in Ottawa. On National March for Life with Foreign Minister Timo Soini. This is awesome!”, wrote State Secretary Virtanen in the tweet.
Well, there’s more.
Evening before, Soini took part in a pro-life vigil in Ottawa. This information may be found on the official website of Soini, where Soini afterwards on 12th May told to have attended the vigil.
There has been several critical voices of Finnish human rights activists asking whether Minister Soini is freely allowed to proclaim his personal narrow-minded religious values in connection with the official duties.
These questions have been directed to Prime Minister of Finland Juha Sipilä and the Finnish government as a whole.
Today, Prime Minister Sipilä made a short and a bit mild statement on the scandal around Minister Soini.
In effect, Sipilä gave his blessing to Soini’s actions by lecturing on the rights of a politician in the free time even during official duties. Though care should always be taken, according to Sipilä.
No big surprise there!
Prime Minister Sipilä has his own ties to the conservative Christianity.
